What This Calculator Does

The Tip Calculator computes the tip amount from a bill and tip percentage, then splits the total among a specified number of people. Enter the bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people to see the tip amount, total bill, and amount each person pays.

Formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People

Where:

  • Bill = The bill amount before tip
  • Tip % = The percentage to tip (entered as a number, e.g., 18 for 18%)
  • Number of People = How many people are splitting the bill

Input Fields Explained

Bill Amount ($)

The total bill before tip. You can enter either the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total — the tip will be calculated on whatever amount you enter. Choose based on your preferred tipping basis.

Tip Percentage (%)

The percentage of the bill to add as a tip. Enter as a number (e.g., 18 for 18%). Tipping customs vary by country and service type — there is no universal standard percentage.

Number of People

The number of people splitting the bill. The total (bill + tip) is divided equally among all people. Set to 1 if you are paying the full bill yourself.

Example Calculation

A $85.50 bill with an 18% tip split among 3 people.

Tip = $85.50 × 0.18 = $15.39

Total = $85.50 + $15.39 = $100.89

Per Person = $100.89 ÷ 3 = $33.63

Each of the 3 people pays $33.63. The tip of $15.39 is split equally as part of the total.

How to Read the Result

Tip Amount

The total tip calculated from the bill and tip percentage. This is added to the bill to get the total payment.

Total

The bill plus the tip — the total amount to be paid. This is the full cost including the gratuity.

Per Person

The total divided by the number of people. Each person pays this amount, which includes their share of both the bill and the tip.

Common Mistakes

  • Tipping on tax when you intended to tip on subtotal. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, make sure you enter the subtotal, not the total with tax. The calculator applies the percentage to whatever you enter.
  • Not rounding appropriately. When splitting a bill, the per-person amount may not divide evenly. Decide whether to round up (the group pays slightly more) or round down (someone covers the remainder).
  • Assuming a universal tipping standard. Tipping customs differ widely across countries, cultures, and service types. What is customary in one country may be considered rude or unnecessary in another.
  • Forgetting that equal splits may not be fair. If one person ordered significantly more than others, an equal split means some people subsidize others. This calculator splits equally — adjust manually for unequal orders.
  • Confusing percentage with flat amount. An 18% tip on a $100 bill is $18, not $18 per person. The tip is calculated on the total bill, not per person.

When This Calculator Is Useful

  • Splitting a restaurant bill among friends
  • Calculating the tip amount for any service
  • Quickly determining total cost including gratuity
  • Comparing tip amounts at different percentages
  • Estimating per-person cost for group dining

Limitations

  • Splits the bill equally — does not handle per-item or per-person individual orders
  • Does not account for different tip amounts per person
  • Does not include sales tax in the calculation (depends on what you enter as the bill amount)
  • Applies a single flat tip percentage to the entire bill
  • Does not handle service charges or automatic gratuities
  • This calculator is for educational purposes only

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage (as a decimal) to get the tip amount, then add it to the bill for the total. For example, an $80 bill with an 18% tip: tip = $80 x 0.18 = $14.40, total = $94.40. To split among multiple people, divide the total by the number of people.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

There is no universal rule. Some people calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount (the subtotal before sales tax is added), while others tip on the total including tax. The difference is usually small. Choose whichever method you prefer or that is customary in your area.

How do I calculate tip quickly without a calculator?

For 10%, move the decimal point one place to the left. For 20%, double the 10% amount. For 15%, take the 10% amount and add half of it. For example, on a $46 bill: 10% = $4.60, 20% = $9.20, 15% = $4.60 + $2.30 = $6.90.

What is a common tip percentage?

Tipping customs vary significantly by country, culture, and service type. In some countries, tipping is customary and amounts vary by service. In others, tipping is uncommon or even considered inappropriate. There is no universal standard — consider the local customs and your personal judgment when deciding how much to tip.

How do I split the bill with different tip amounts per person?

This calculator splits the total (bill + tip) equally among all people. If individuals want different tip amounts, calculate each person's share of the bill separately and apply their individual tip percentage. For example, if three people owe $30, $25, and $35 respectively, each calculates their own tip based on their share.

Does this calculator include tax in the bill?

The calculator applies the tip percentage to whatever bill amount you enter. If you enter the total including tax, the tip is calculated on the post-tax amount. If you enter the pre-tax subtotal, the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount. Enter the amount that matches your intended tipping basis.
